The birds are chirping and the sweet smells of springtime are finally here! The rites of spring may include enjoying outdoor activities and indoor spring cleaning activities. For seniors, these activities can pose safety challenges. Listed below are some helpful tips for senior safety around the home this spring.
Medication:
Update subscription medications, supplements, and vitamins
Safely dispose of any expired medicine
Kitchen:
Check that all large and small appliances are in good working condition
Declutter counter tops by storing away appliances that are rarely used
Post emergency contact numbers on the fridge and near the telephone
Bathroom:
If needed, install grab bars and a raised toilet seat
Make sure floor and tub/shower are non-slip
Make sure bath mats have are low profile with non-skid backing
Bedroom:
Make sure medical alert device and/or phone is easy to reach
Install automatic lights to light the way to the bathroom
Use bedside lamps that are easy to turn on and off
Make sure the bed is easy to transfer in and out of
Keep clothing and grooming items within reach
General House:
Set water heater temperature so as to avoid burns
Check that all sinks/drains are working
Change smoke detector batteries
Make sure hallways and main floor spaces are clutter-free
Check that flooring is smooth and free of tripping hazards like rugs
Outside the House:
Make sure that house numbers are clearly visible from the street, night and day
Clear walkways and install support hand rails if needed
